Hi June,

Thank you so much for trying to help me.

What is throwing me is that if she was illegitimate and born as Hilton, why does she give White as her maiden name on her sons birth certificate.

Also the family I found in the census looks like John White and wife Elizabeth nee Hilton, so Elizabeth is probably Sarah Anns mother. But why is dad named as John Hilton on Sarahs marriage and also a witness.

Sorry to go on but this is really doing my head in.

Chris

Hi June,

Thank you for your help. I think I will just have to send for the Sarah Ann White birth certificate as White is the given maiden name on her sons birth certificate.

Because of that, the fact an Emma White was one of her witnesses, Sarah and George were living with Emma Whites parents and family in 1881 and Emma Watts (nee White), her husband and children were living with Sarah and George in 1891 makes me think they were very closely related, possibly sisters. I just wish I could sort it out, it's giving me a right headache.

If I was to order her birth certificate, which would it be. On her son Edgars birth certificate she states maiden name is White. So Joneseys find looks the better bet.

On her marriage dads surname is Hilton so Junes could be right. Unfortunately as she was 22 when she married in December 1879 so both fit the bill, grrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Hi folks, I must be missing something you experts can see.

Jonesey found what looks like Sarah Anns birth reg under the name White.

The possible marriage for John and Elizabeth gives the name Hilton which is where my confusion comes in. Johns surname is White but on Sarahs marriage it states John Hilton is her father but Hilton was Elizabeths maiden name.

Hi June,

Thank you for trying to help. In 1881 Elizabeth is shown to be only 1 year older than husband John. Daughter Emmas age is consistant with the entry in 1871. I am finding this very confusing.

Hi Jonesey,

Thank you for replying.

What I don't understand is where the name Hilton came from. My thoughts are that when she and George are with the White family in 1881, they are actually her parents. I have not been able to find her with a John Hilton.

I am so confused with this, could someone give me the benefit of their expertise. This is what I have.

Edgar Pashley born in Bolsover on 3/6/1892 to George Pashley and Sarah Ann nee White.

George Pashley 20 yrs and Sarah Ann Hilton 22 yrs married on 24/11/1879 at St Marys in Chesterfield. Sarahs father is John Hilton a brickmaker. Witnesses were John Hilton and Emma White. I believe Sarah just made her mark.

This is the only marriage I can find for a George Pashley in the right time frame.

I have the family in the 1911 census which states George and Sarah have been married for 32 years which ties in with the 1879 marriage. Edgar has been transcribed as Egar.

In 1881 George and Sarah are with the White family. John a brickmaker, his wife Elizabeth, their daughter Emma, son Frank and boarder Frank Watts. George Pashley has been listed as boarder and Sarah as his wife.

I believe I have John and Elizabeth in the 1871 census. As well as their son Thomas aged 19, their daughters Sarah Ann and Emma are also listed. Sarah Anns place of birth is Lincolnshire, the same as Georges wife Sarah and Emmas is Yorkshire, as it is in 1881.

Could there have been a mistake made on the marriage details? It seems starnge that Johns occupation was a brickmaker on the marriage certificate (as was John Whites) White is Sarahs maiden name on Edgars birth certificate and the witness Emma White also shown with a Sarah Ann White on the 1871 census.

Hope I've explained it well enough.

Chris
