Good question!

Usually when one sees that kind of "double booking", they've not taken the first sailing for some reason, and then gone later.

I know many "modern" emigrants from the UK to various countries have returned to the Uk within a few months or a couple of years, and then emigrated once again!

When OH went to the US Embassy in London for his interview back in 1967, there was a couple there who were trying to get a visa for their 4th trip over to the US! They'd go, she'd get homesick after about a year, so back to the UK, realise they liked the US (and made much more money there!), apply for another job and visa ... and so on!

I do have notice of their arrival in Auckland on the Tamar in Jan 1858 so why would they then be booked on the Evening Star in Dec 1858

It could

or it could also mean that they were booked on one of the ships, didn't actuually make the trip but their names remained on the passenger list.

Not unknown.

You actually want to see if you can find the notice of their arrival in NZ .... that would help sort the matter out better than re-looking at the passenger lists.

I have a passenger list for George, Emma, Frederick & Ann Francis Abercrombie arriving in Auckland on the Tamar 28th Jan 1858 and another one for them arriving on the Evening Star on 21st Dec 1858 does this mean they went back to England and came out again. Could someone please check this for me.
