Hi Linda again :-)

I should add that an adopted child has the legal right to access their original birth certificate. If your friend cannot find his birth listing then he can go to this website

http://www.adoptionsearchreunion.org.uk/search/adoptionrecords/

Type in the area of birth and it will show who to apply to.

Hope this helps. Gerry

Hi Linda

If the mother is unmarried then the child should be registered in her maiden name. If the father consented, the birth will be registered in both the mother's maiden name and the fathers name and be found twice in the birth index.

Adopted children are not listed in the birth index as only live BIRTHS can be registered.

After a child has been adopted they are then placed on the Adopted Children Register and listed in the adoptive name. The INDEX of the ACR can be viewed in person at certain main libraries in England and Wales.

After the adoption has been granted in the court the child is then issued with a new 'birth' certificate which is in fact an Adoption Certificate. This cert is used for all legal purposes. The short cert looks like a regular birth cert and makes no mention of adoption. The full cert gives name and date of court details and adoptive parents name and address. It makes no mention of the birth mother and so a link cannot be made except by date of birth. Adoption certs can be ordered online from the GRO website.

If you don't know the mother's maiden name then you may have to trawl the marriage index and order a marriage cert for details.

Hope this helps.

Cheers Gerry

When Ancestry transcribes the indexes they don't always get the county right, but since you don't need to mention the county when ordering a certificate it doesn't really matter as long as the district is right.

As we don't know his name, we can't help you out. But if you have a birth reg, Bromley, it will have a District Number. You can look that up and see if it was Devon/Cornwall/Seilly (where on earth is that?). Bromley was Kent up to 1965 and the District Number was 5b, but 1965 onwards it was London, and District Number 5A.

I have found a possible registration for him on Ancestry Birth Index, his 3rd christian name isn't shown but it is a possibility the 3rd name was added on adoption as it's the same name as the adoptive father.

The Registration District is Bromley but the Registration County is shown as Devon/Cornwall/Seilly. Is it possible there is a mistake as Bromley would be correct but not the County.

If the mother hadn't decided what to call him when she registered the birth, he would have been entered under the surname but at the end of the list as 'Male'.

Hi Janice,
Sorry if I'm a bit thick with this but what do you mean by "Was he entered as a Male Surname" He kept the same christian names.

Janice

PS The 2nd birth cert after adoption might be in the year of adoption rather than the year of birth possibly.

Hi Linda,
You don't need to produce your birth cert when you get married.
Birth would be registered in mother's maiden name if she was unmarried.
Was he registered as Male Surname? Or possibly have had a different first name prior to adoption?

Can anyone tell me what name I search for the birth record for the following please:
Son born 1946 to his unmarried mother, when she gets married her new husband (not the childs father) adopts by him. The child now an adult gets married in his adopted name (he didn't know at the time that he was adopted). Problem is he can't find a registered birth in either name.
My instinct said search the birth name but surely when he got married he would have to produce his birth cert. and would have noticed anything as major as the incorrect name?
Can someone put me straight on this please.
Also how should this be entered on the tree.
