On the 1861 cenus my 3 x great grandmother Elizabeth Pound, has stated that she is a widow, on a pension, husband Captain RN. She is living with her nephew, who no dount gave the details to the enumerator.
I found on Ancestry the baptism of their daughter Elizabeth Pound in 1815 and the father Charles Pound's occupation is Taylor (Tailor) Also another daughter Jane in 1817, father's occupation Taylor.
Looked up the business's index and found that the surname Pound had indeed a taylors business, and the name of the man was Giles Murley Pound.
Elizabeth Pound the daughter, went on to marry John Horne, and one of her sons was Charles Murley Pound Horne, Also one of her daughters had a son Murley So obviously a connection.
What I wondered could Charles have gone in the navy as a tailor, or was this a story made up by Elizabeth Pound.
Can anyone enlighten me.

When did Charles Pound die? Have you considered the possibility of a second marriage after the death of Charles? Though it would be quite a step up in society for her to marry a captain in the Royal Navy such things are not unheard of. And a few captains started their naval careers "on the lower deck".

Are you sure the occupation on the certificate isn't a mistranscription of Sailor rather than Tailor. I've seen this several times before.

Maybe it was her father's occupation - or perhaps the occupations of one of her sons and she was a bit confused ... ?

Thank you so much everyone.

Maybe he did get fed up with tailoring, and went in Navy, Elizabeth Pound is a widow on the 1841 census, drawing a pension. Living with daughter Elizabeth and son in law John Horne

Yes Sylvia, this is their marriage.

Helen -, Mary Ann Traver, 87 was really Mary Ann Fraser, 57 (transcribing error), who was Elizabeth's sister and her name as Mary Ann Thompson was on the marriage as witness.

Allan C, nothing about him after the 1817 baptism of daughter Jane. as he is not on 1841 census, think maybe he died about 1835.
She still had the name Pound on 1861 census

Thank you all once again.

Kathleen- Yes maybe the vicar was hard of hearing and he thought it was Tailor, and it was Sailor. must think on that one.

It was the fact that the Murley name came into two more generations that got me thinking, he was indeed a tailor, and Giles Murley Pound had the tailoring business

Actually kath meant a literal mistranscription of the T of tailor for the S of sailor, not a mis-hearing by the vicar

Handwriting in those days was often quite or very elaborate, and most of us have seen cases where a modern-day transcriber has made this mistakes ........ or where we ourselves have mis-read it!

You're right

no mistake

It is Taylor on Jane's baptism

so that theory has gone out the window!

I like the possibility that he might have been a Tailor to the Forces, and possibly joined the Navy
