Hi everyone,
I am new to genealogy and just finding my feet. Can anybody tell me why the 1881 census is not on this site?

Because GR can not charge for something that is FREE

It is available on Familysearch (IGI), Ancestry and Findmypast but you will not be able to view the images on Ancestry and FMP without paying

Mark

go to www.familysearch.org

This is the Mormon site (or LDS church)

Click on Advanced Search

Scroll down to Censuses

1881 English and Wales is there

BUT you cannot look at the census image on that site.

To do that you have to go to either ancestry.co.uk or findmypast

You might want to consider not renewing the Gold membership on here when it comes time .................... it is very expensive for what you get ...................... and in fact in most cases you are directed to other sites. GR does not itself carry any official records.

Consider very seriously taking out a subscription to either ancestry or findmypast. My personal choice is ancestry

If you are searching for bmds (births marriages and deaths), you would do far better to go www.freebmd.org.uk. This is a FREE site, on which volunteers are entering all bmds since registraiton began on July 1 1837. They are currently up to about 1935/1940

You can always put up a request on one of the Community boards if and when you get stuck.

There are loads of helpers ............ all of them members like yourself, but with a little more expertise and subscriptions in other sites.

Best places to post such requests are Records Office, Tips or Trying to Find ......... but only one posting on a topic please!!! Please don't repeat postings on more than one board ....... we all look at all boards

Good hunting

Please could I have your advice Sylvia. My GR gold membership is coming up for renewal, but I want to subscribe to Ancestry too. Firstly, if I renew just standard GR membership, what will I get? Also, I have been researching my German ancestors and have put a couple of posts on the boards asking for help, but got no replies. Would it be helpful to subscribe to Ancestry Worldwide for this and do you think it would be worth it. It's so expensive. Thanks.

Standard Membership lets you post on the message boards, send messages to other members and view their trees, subject to them giving you access. You won't have access to any records.

For full details of the membership options have a look at the site Terms and Conditions, You will find them right near the bottom of this page, top line of the page footer.

How about taking out the Premium membership in ancestry ..... and asking on the boards for help in finding your German ancestors.

There are members who have Worldwide membership. I myself have Premium, and ask for help for the odd time I need to know something about the US

As regards standard membership on here ..... it will cost you £9.95 for 6 months. You will have access to search all trees, send pms and read and post on all these boards.

The other alternative is to just not renew at all, you will be dropped down to Free membership, which allows you to maintain and update your tree and receive pms frm other members. You can read these boards bu not post on them, and you cannot initiate pms from other members

Thanks very much Inspector GP and Sylvia for your helpful replies. I need to give it some thought now, but I know that bloomin' Ancestry is beckoning me bigtime - I even think it whispers in my ear when I'm asleep 'Come and get meeeee'!

Dont forget to take advantage of freereg, freebmds, freecen.

All being done by volunteers. Also not forgetting the local reg offices on UK BMDS which in some cases they name the spouse.

Lancashire? I think even gives where marriages take place
