the second marriage cert that you know is him .will state his marital status if he was a widower then its worth getting the previous cert OR look for a possible death of a female Lawley between the two marriage dates

i have two marriages for norris lawley one in june 1909 and one in mar 1916 i know the one in 1916 had a son victor lawley (my husbands grandfather) but i think the one in 1909 is the same man, could the first wife have died ? is there any children from the first marriage? i can,t find norris on the 1911 census ? where do i go from here i am well and trully stuck.
would love any kind of help please thanks michelle x
