I know that my grandad was sent to Sedbury park approved school in Chepstow when he was aged about 7 ( about 1945) Some of his older brothers and sisters were also sent to approved schools (but not sure what ones, different to grandad) One of his brothers was also put into a mental institute. Is there any way that I can find records of when and why they were taken away from their mother and sent to these schools. My grandad returned home when he was 14 years old. There is family talk that she beat his brother which is why he was put in a mental institute.
Thank you.

Kelly, have you tried a google search? Might or might not help but often a good starting point.

I have tried googling using every word I could find but haven't had any luck so thought I would see if any of you wise and wonderful people knew where I could look.

You could try to find the SS offices in Monmouthshire - I think that's were Chepstow is.

They may have records about your grandfather in their archives, or at least may be able to point you in the right direction.

Failing that, there is always the good old library - they wouldn't have your relatives records, but may have info about the 'school'.

Sedbury Park ceased being an Approved School sometime around the late 1970's early 1980's.
It has since been renovated and is now a residential home for the elderly.

The postal address for Sedbury Park is Chepstow, with NP (Newport) post code, which would mean the admin is Monmouthshire......
.....except that it actually stands in Gloucestershire, so you will need to contact SS in Gloucester or Coleford.

P.S. It's still a beautiful old mansion building which stands in its own grounds (large) and dominates the skyline above the village, with the river Severn running at the back of it.

Karen in the desert - Thank you for that info. I have got some pictures of sedbury park from googling. I was looking for more info though on why my grandad was left there, who left him there?
I think me and my grandad are going to take a trip over to Chepstow to have a look at the place as my grandad said he would like to go back.

DET - Thank you, I think I might check with my local records office to see if they know where the records are stored.
