SCOTTISH WORKHOUSE ADDRESS

Does any one know please is 17 Borthwick Close, Leith,Edinburgh the same place as The Workhouse? I have found a descendant listed as a 'lodger' at Borthwick Close, on the 1901 census, along with a great long list of other 'lodgers'. There seems too many to be lodging at a house so wonder if it is another address for the Poorhouse/Workhouse.

Thank you
Rosie

When you check through some of the names on the census, you will see that many of them are actually living in Old Fishmarket Close as well as Borthwick Close. All the residents appear to have occupations ... and are in regulated families.

Think the census transcription has amalgamated two addresses by mistake.

'Closes' tended to be dwellings only ... woudn't imagine a workhouse would have fitted into the restricted space.

Workhouses were usually large buildings standing on their own.

Thank you very much Helen for explaining.
