Finding a birth before 1841 census

My Gt. Grandfather was born in Great Boughton, Cheshire 1838, how can I find his parents, will I need to apply for his birth certificate and how will I know it's the correct one, any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

Have you checked FREEBMD??? Registration started in 1837, so you maybe lucky??

If not have you tried IGI?? Failing all of that what about his marriage cert, this would confirm his fathers name.

Have you looked on FreeBMD? It started in July 1837 so he MAY be on there.

well


look on the 1841 Census

see if you can find your gr grandfather in Gret Boughton, or nearby


get the name of the father

Double check if possible on the 1851


OR get his marriage certificate, see what name is on there. Double check that against the censuses


Find the bc on www.freebmd.org.uk


Use the name of the father from the 1841 or marriage certificate as a reference point

The marriage cert is a must to show that you are tracking the right family - particulary if it's a fairly common name ...

You have all the information you need from FreeBMD to order his birth certificate. That will name both parents (unless he was illegitimate).
