I am particularly interested as some of the Evitt family moved into Greenwich and knew my great grandmother's family.

I have been updating census info today including 1911.

Melvilles 1858 Directory of Kent.
Uvitt, George, Coach and Horses, Spital street
Evitt, George, ironmonger, Spital street

My hairdressers is on Spital street. Many old buildings are still there.

The George Uvitt relates to his father.so maybe he took on his fathers business.

Further information is on my tree. I think you may have access already. If not send me a message.

It doesn't say Master anything. It is an ornate B. There is another B further down the page which is similar. I read it as Brazier & Ironmonger. The '&' runs into the 'I' of Ironmonger a bit, so it looks like a 'J'.

Many Thanks for your help Jonesey and ozi it looks very much like an enumerators fault as you stated
I have found It was quite common for my ancesters to retire from a profession and become a Licenced Victuallar. But going from a coppersmith to a Doctor to a Publican seemed very strange. That's why I thought I would check it out.
Maybe it should read Master Craftsman if he was a coppersmith that may well have fit.
Once again many thanks for your help.

1861:
General Practioner MRCSL & LACL has been crossed out & written again for his next-door neighbour. I would say the enumerator made a mistake.

1851: Coppersmith & BRAZIER [someone who works with brass]
1861: Brazier & Ironmonger

By the 1881 census he had retired.
His name was George Evitt born c1819 Kent he never married and appeared to live at various addresses in Spital Street Dartford Kent all of his life.
Would appreciate other census lookups as I don't currently have any subscriptions Thanks.

Have you found him on other censuses? Sometimes you can find a better description.

If you would like someone to look, post his details on here.
