seeing this made me remember my dad said something about a hodson in newport gwent late 1800s to early 1900s i think,
to do with dredging and stuff,
thats around the docks area here
and now this turns up and william you say is a ship driller,

i dont know if they had any connection, and maybe he moved on to big buisness
seems coincidence

i think there was a link in my grans family tho,
but i cant find anything out

Hi, sorry, i can't really help with search tips on GR, i have never searched Census records on this site. I have only ever used Ancestry i'm afraid.

Hi,
Sorry to be dumb but where do you use a wild search like that? I've only used the search on GR and it doesn't seem to take the asterisk. I can see why I couldn't find him in 1901 as he's there as Hodgson but the 1891 looks just like I'm typing in...

Hi again, many of the Census records have been mistranscribed, this does make it difficult sometimes. The 1901 i found by putting in

W K Hod*

The 1891 i found by putting in

Will* K Hod*

Sometimes it helps to leave the Surname blank , and in many cases they're just not there at all !.

Hope this helps a little.

I still can't actually see them on the 1891 and 1901 censuses - I can't work out what I'm doing wrong when I can find William OK on the 1871 and 1881.

Thanks again for the info though, good to have the trail active again!

My ancestor William Kemy Hodson was born in 1862 in Sunderland - parents William Ailing Hodson(b. 1832) and Mary Ann (b. 1841). I can find him in 1871 and 1881 living with his parents and siblings, and a marriage in 1889 to either Isabel or Alice, but after that I can't find any trace, either in Census or death certificates.

Is there a way I can find if he left the country, or am I missing something?
Family legend says we have family in Australia so maybe a connection?.
Any advice on where to look next would be much appreciated thanks!
