can anyone advise me on where i can obtain information on a relative born in scotland. His name is James Edward Kay and he was born about 1832 and all it says on the census is scotland. I have been having trouble locating him before the census in 1871

Can you post the 1871 or 1881 details please to show where he is located and if married etc

james kay head - (job =market porter),ellen kay - wife
children - kelly kay,john j kay,thomas kay, margaret kay,fred kay and elizabeth

know information for 1871 is correct.....

in the 1871 census i found a James Kay born in scotland details as follows (not too sure if one in the same?)
james kay (job =tailor )and wife elliza kay
children mary and helen

address - 31 cleveland street, cavendish square, marlebone, all souls, london

According to the 1911 census, the second James you posted, the tailor, was from Haddington, so you can rule this birth out.

Found a marriage for a James Edward Kay & Ellen Evans in 1878 but it is in Birmingham. Do you think that is likely?

I think you need the birth certificate of one of the children first, and then the marriage certificate of James and Ellen. How do you know his second name is Edward?

the information you have for 1881 census is correct also the marriage info could be correct asI know there son thomaswas born in 1879 in shifnal, salop and i have his birth certificate which state the following

thanks all for your assistance on this, i believe the info that kath gave regarding marriage certificate in birmingham is correct so going to send for that and see what informationthat throws up will advise once received if need any more help

Are you sure that you have the correct Thomas Kay birth?
It's just that the census have him born in Manchester the same as the other children.
I would hate you to spend the money on the Birmingham marriage cert if it was wrong.
