You say you need a reference copy - I don't know if you'll find the standard acceptable, though, but a gedcom file is really just a text file, and you can print it out as is - the sort of thing you'll get is:

0 @I42@ INDI
1 NAME Francis /Massie/
1 SEX M
1 BIRT
2 DATE 15 AUG 1808
2 PLAC Gamrie,Banffshire
1 DEAT

1 FAMS @F22@
1 FAMS @F151@
1 FAMC @F38@

So if you locate your gedcom, say MyTree.ged in Windows Explorer and right click on it and chose Open with Notepad, you can print it out from Notepad. Alternatively, from the Start Button - All Programs - Accessories - Notepad starts Notepad, and in Notepad you can File - Open (choosing All Files, instead of Text Documents) and select MyTree.ged.

It's not the most attractive format, and has all the FAMS/FAMC clutter that forms the tree, but it is readable after a fashion.

CAUTION When you close Notepad, if it asks you "Do you want to save changes?" - say NO - you shouldn't make any if you don't know what you're doing, so any you did make were accidental, and you don't want to change anything permanently.

Yes,it will, and whilst FTM isn't free but there are offers out at the moment. There are a couple of threads showing these on the Tips board.

I use the PAF tree - free from the familysearch site.

I print out a page for each direct ancestor and family record sheets for all of the siblings etc.

Plenty of room for notes.

Hi, yes I have checked the printing options and gone through the processes available to see exactly what info is printed and in all options it doesn't print the notes section, it is a freeware prog though. Is FTM a prog that you bought? does it allow you to print notes?
Many thanks

I use Family Tree Maker (FTM) This allows you to produce a wide range of reports and to select as little or as much info as you want to print.

Have you checked if your prog has such an option? It is likely to be somewhere under report options and titled something like 'Items to Include'

Thanks for the info, I've now got a copy of the Gedcom file and have loaded into a free software prog, however I'm still only able to print the main info for each tree menber, BMD etc, but still unable to print the notes section, can anyone suggest a prog that will enable me to do this? I have lots of into in the notes section and need a printout as reference.
Thank you in advance.

If you click on your GR home button then scroll down to the bottom of the page
click on import export gedcom
save a gedcom file to your computer
then use any one of loads of freeware programs to print details reports etc.
you can find a list of genealogy freeware at:

Not on here I dont think.

You can transfer a copy of your tree to Tribal pages free by Gedcom and print off quite nicely from there

Hi, does anyone know how I can print the 'details' of individuals in my family tree please? I have printed the whole tree showing names only but would like a printout showing all the details I have entered, even if it's one person per page.
Thanks
Ruth
