Gillian

I was just advising that any information you have needs to be posted on the thread - which is where we are now - and not in a private message. You obviously now know how to post on the thread, so carry on doing so.

So far we have found that Sarah Paton did not die until Sept 1851, and the father remarried to Sarah Rimmer in March 1853.

Does that seem feasible Gillian? Did you make a mistake about the first wife dying in 1850, or did you find one that you thought was correct?

Dear MargaretManson

Yes, happy with what you say. Just concerned that Gill said first wife had died 1850. Wonder why she thought that.

Gillian - any comment?

Depending on their ages he may well have had to farm them out to members of his family or even his neighbours. He would have needed to work to keep them from the workhouse.

My gr grandmother died when my grandfather was 2 years old. My mother told me of her father's memories of "living with an aunt in the country" so I assume my grandfather stayed with one of his father's sisters for a while until his father got back on his feet or until my grandfather was old enough to go to school and not need so much looking after. My grandfather's only sister was "adopted" by another family (at least that is what it says in the 1881 census) - I believe this was because she was the only girl. She maintained contact with the family though as by the time she was married she was living in the same road as my gr grandfather.

So, check the father's siblings - and the mother's siblings too. Then, trawl for the children one by one if needs be on the census.

I doubt that they would be too far from their dad.
