Thanks for your advise, I am a bit of a computer/family tree novice, I am ok if everything is straight forweard. I am an OAP so cannot get to Kew or anywhere, so I am trying to do it on line. TRhanks for trying. I first thought I would start with the youngest but they appear to have disappeared. I have joined the East of London Family History as weell, as Joseph (one of the ones born in Gib) was living in Mile End London at the time of his marriage in 1878 to a Mary Ann Williams in Sheppey. Pwerhaps she remarried and went there. I will keep trying. Thanks a lot to everyone.

Valerie

Thank you for saying thank you

just one point

I was quite aware that you had that information. That's why I said "for reference purposes", and "is this Sarah in 1851"

You had all this information ................. but we have to understand it and get our heads around the family and information before we can offer any help

It is quite common for someone to post the known information on a thread to save everyone else having to look it up to see if there is anything on there that has not been picked up or reported that could help

as indeed I picked up the fact that children had been born in Gibraltar, ireland and Isle of Wight, and that the parents had been born in Ireland.

One way of finding a mother is by looking for one or more of the children, using christian names only as she may have remarried. And birthplace is important in doing that search.

The problem of course is that most children in that day and age would have been out working by the age of 13 or so, probably in service

Yes, this is the family. I did not think of the army as Joseph and all the subsequent family until the 1959 were in the navy/Marines.

Gibraltar have not records for me on the births, I have tried churches etc

It does look like Sarah with 2 children, the baby from the 1851 Census

Don't forget ........ very few of our ancestors were literate, they could not read or write. So mistakes and errors in spelling are very very common.

I wonder if Wiliam was in the Army ........................ that seems likely with children born in Irland and in Gibraltar

I am trying to find Sarah Keefe born 1852 - I think on 1861 census it says O'Keefe but on 1851 census her mothers name is Keeff with Richard born Gibraltar 1841 plus other family but cannot find them at all after this. Can anyone help. Please I have been for years trying to find relatives of Joseph Keefe born Gib 1838 father William. Now on the 1852 census I have found Richard born 1841 Gib father William. but spellings are different. I have William senior dying 1856 Portsea. It all seems to much of a coincidence not to be the same family. As most of these names are the same as Josephs children. Please help I would really appreciate it. I can only understand the basic searches but I have been all afternoon and got nowhere. Thank you
