Yes Jill , Philcox is quite a rare name it seems , so maybe Walter will tie in somewhere : )

Yes Marion , that is the family in 1881 . It seems that Samuel and Ruth where staying with friends Essex and where not with the rest of the family for the cencus .

Yes - on Ancestry LMA records.

I'm not sure about Walter either but Philcox seems a fairly rare name so thought it worth adding him.

Might not be relevant in your case, but I remember watching Who do you think you are, there was an expert saying that syphilis was rife in the 1800's. Apparently it caused miscarriages, then stillbirths, then neonatal deaths, then normal children, almost as if the effects wore off each pregnancy. I too have a family couple like yours, may be a reason?

Hello David ......yes I did that and found one possiability George Philcox born in 1849 Bermondsey looks like he might have been theirs.

Amanda2003 Report 9 Feb 2010 12:50

I have a couple in my tree ( G.G.Grandparents ) and I am having doubts about the Mrs actually being the Mother of the children.

Henry George Philcox and Mary Ann Davey married on 8th August 1845 at Holborn . I have found them in all of the censuses. The first born child mentioned is in the 1861 cencus ( Samuel , 1 year old born in Bermondsey ) . I notice they have a young female servant at the time .
Next child along is Ruth Eliza ( my G.Grandmother ) b. 28th April 1861 ( Mary Davey is named as her MOther on the birth cert .)
Two other children follow ( James Alfred b. 1862 and Henry Nelson b. 1864 )
I find it really difficult to believe that they went 15 years without children then had four in rapid succession .
What do others think ...please .
