enumerator add , 'cohabiting' , also " This is a girl although name seems to be that of a boy " (Leander) and by two names "Unfortunates...In open air by roadside in Dockwell lane", interestingly it is caravans and tents... so a travellers site... names Penfold, Hoadley ? and Geary if anyone has them in tree. How very 'PC' of him! :)

Interesting that he actually managed to enumerate them.

I read 'somewhere' that, more often than not, they were left the household schedule to complete but the travellers had gone before the enumerator called again.

This meant that they were either entered as a guess... Man aged about 30... Or at the end of the return as 'Gypsies/Travellers' and just a head count, based on the memory of the enumerator when he originally visited.

I found three families on one census "living" in the booking office at Macclesfield station.

I was an ennumerator in 1991, and you didn't just get a list of addresses to visit, you got a map of your patch, and it was your job to check out the whole area. I had a river valley included, and had to check for people camping, ask householders if they had a caravan on the premises if anyone was living in it, and if shops had people living in a flat above.
