2010 (originally released as 2008) is a completely different program, not an upgrade.

Has largely the same functionality, but the look and feel is totally different, much more of a 'windows' feel to it, in fact it looks a bit like the Ancestry Tree does now, but then they probably share the same programming team

However once I got used to it - about half a day after several years of using the earlier program - I wouldn't go back. Minor drawback for me is that one of the reports I used now and again isn't currently available.

Don't buy FTM 2008. As often with a first release it had some shortcomings. These were ironed out on the 2009 version - 2010 added more functions and improved performance.

If you go to Windows 7 then there could be problems with versions 2006 and earlier, as they have not been certified to work with it..

I am using FTM2005( it was very cheap a couple of years ago). Is it worth upgrading?

Thanks
Nick

TWR Computing have FTM2009 including 6 months essential ancestry sub (you can upgrade to premium) for £19.99 including postage.

I still think 2006 was the best one they produced. I am actually putting my tree on ancestry now, Sooo easy to search and merge from the information on the site and other peoples trees.

This release note described the enhancements to 2009 which appeared in the 2010 version.

The following is a list of what is new in FTM 2010.

* Enhanced integration with Ancestry.com - Import your Ancestry.com family tree, along with attached photos.

* Improved organization - Enjoy new ways to organize photos and other media.

* Slideshows - Create slideshows from photos in your tree.

* Standard source templates - Cite the right information every time.

* A new person view - View relationships within the context of your entire family tree.

* Scanner support - Add photos directly from your scanner.

* Family migration paths - View timelines and interactive maps highlighting events and places in your ancestors’ lives.

* Better Performance - Experience faster load times and navigation.

Having used it now since Christmas, once I got used to its windows feel, I prefer 2010 to 2006 I agree, though, some of the reports are a bit disappointing. Whilst it's not a big deal for me, it might tip the scales for some users.

2006 is still available at very competitive prices, by the way.

Yes I saw that this morning. But what does FTM 2010 Platinum do that's new/better than my old 2005 version? I bought the 2009 upgrade and couldn't see any improvement - in fact there seemed to be less choice of chart formats, styles, colours etc.
