Hi Maid Marion...

I think we have been in contact before, ("the Tattooed Man"?)
Anyway, I want to thank you for your very informative email. As I said to 'Rutland Belle', I won't be able to work on any of the information given tonight as I am about to go out..

Thank you for going to all the trouble to copy all the information, I really appreciate it.

Cheers

Joy Reid.

http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/cms/1226.htm

If you write to York and ask for a search: £5 (This covers the four year period from the date of death). There is a further search fee of £3 for each subsequent 4 year period searched. If a grant is traced, the fee includes a copy of the Will [if any], regardless of the number of pages, and copy of the grant.
If you wish to write for a search and/or copy, you should write to The Postal Searches & Copies Dept, York Probate Sub-Registry, Castle Chambers, Clifford Street, York, YO1 9RG, where a special unit deals with such requests. Download an application form with their Conditions of Service.

The following is from the site given. As far as I am aware, post-1858 wills can only be ordered this way.

http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/cms/1226.htm

Where are the Calendars kept?
The only place where there is a complete set of calendars [from 1858] available for public inspection is First Avenue House in London. Most District Probate Registries have calendars covering at least the last fifty years. If you intend to visit a Registry specifically to look at the records, you are recommended to contact the Registry beforehand [a list of addresses and telephone numbers appears overleaf] to check what is available.

What if I cannot get to First Avenue House or a Registry?
Registry officials will make a search on your behalf. There is a charge for this but if a grant is traced, the search fee includes the provision of a copy of the grant and [if any], the Will.

You must write to the Postal Searches and Copies Department at York (The Postal Searches & Copies Dept, York Probate Sub-Registry, 1st Floor, Castle Chambers, Clifford Street, York, YO1 9RG) giving the full name, address and date of death of the deceased, stating what you require and enclosing the appropriate fee.

Requests cannot be accepted by telephone.

I know the details of the Grant - how do I get the copies I want?
Once you know when and where a grant issued, you can have copies of the Grant and the Will [if any]. You may order copies at First Avenue House or any District Probate Registry. You should state the full name of the deceased, the date of the grant, the Registry where it issued, what copies you want and pay the appropriate fee. You may order copies by post or by attending any Registry. Telephone orders cannot be accepted.

How long does it take to obtain copies?
The length of time taken to supply copies varies, depending upon where the original documents are kept. In some cases we may be able to give you a copy 'on the spot' but generally we have to order them from the place where the original documents are held.

The Probate Service aims to supply copies within 21 working days of your application.

Joy go to the National Archives site

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

at the top rt hand corner where it says 'seacrh the archives' type in Wills and you will find lots of info.

You can even download and print off a form to send to York Probate Office. I sent for one £5 and it came in under 3 weeks and was worth every penny

Good Luck

Brummiejan has named the site that I used, but at 4am, when I put my post my brain was asleep and I forgot to put the link.
I clicked on 'performing a standing search' and right at the bottom was a bit regarding ' a general search'. This is the one I used. I am waiting for my reply and hopefully they will have something for me.
You can contact them by phone too. Number is on the site. It might be best to call first rather than waste money. I have just taken the plunge.

Try this site - it is the official government one and at first glance looks very helpful.

I am not sure either but I have sent for one anyway. Maybe someone on here knows a little more about it. As it is only £5 I thought it worth a go.
Good luck. I am off to bed to try again to get to sleep. lol

Hi Cheryl

Well I'm sorry to say I'm not up at 4am - I'm in New Zealand and it's only 5.15pm here!
I have absolutely no Idea what a "Grant and Will to the Probate Service" means I'm afraid. Obviously that's why I need help!
But thanks for your Reply.

Cheers

Joy.

Hi,
I have just sent off for a search for a grant and will to the probate service. This costs just £5 and if they find a will it is included in the price.
I am sure their are other ways, but this is the one I am following first.
I'm glad I am not the only wally up at 4am - couldn't sleep.
