I believe this decision was taken in 2005 when Siemens IT Solutions was awarded a three-year contract to undertake the digitisation of all BMD records at the GRO. The Siemens contract expired in 2008, by which time approximately half of the records had been digitised.

A joint decision was made not to not renew the contract (as no further budget was forthcoming), and at that point the Digitisation Project was closed. I understand that outline plans have been made to take to project to completion, but no dates or budgets have been agreed as yet.

This is a copy of the message, given by Find My Past, about records for 2006 and later. You cannot search online.

GRO has withdrawn the service to sell birth, marriage and death marriage indexes and the last indexes supplied to commercial customers are for 2006 Births and Deaths.
To apply for the certificate of a marriage which occurred after 2005, it is necessary to contact the appropriate registration office directly.
A list of contact details for registration offices can be found at Genuki.org.uk
