I need some help. Got a bit stuck and not sure where to go from here. I'm trying to find out a mother's maiden name. I have a christening record from familysearch for an individual christened in 1833. The info I have already tells me Fathers name and Mother's first name. How would I go about finding the Mother's maiden name? Would I need to write to somewhere and would I need any reference numbers other than names and dates? The person I have is a John Hudson Christened 12th July 1833 stockport cheshire. Fathers name is Joseph Hudson Mother Sarah. I have a reference number for a VDE batch, and a file number. Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you
Janet

Hi Janet, have you tried finding the baptisms of any siblings, it may list the maiden name on one of their records.

Sometimes you can find the marriage records too.

Good luck :)

This may be a silly question but do you know how to find siblings? (ie by looking for children of Joseph Hudson and Sarah)

Hi ,
I've just looked on familysearch and typed in the siblings names but nothing came up. I'd welcome anymore advice. Siblings I found on ancestry on the census. That was the easy bit. Just having difficulty with the rest.

An even sillier question!! I suppose there are no siblings 1837 onwards??

That's why whenever I ask for help on here, people always come up trumps.
I've just had a look again at siblings ages and lo and behold the last one was born about 1839 (after1837) But it took someone else to see the obvious. I've done this years but just couldn't see how to find the info.
Jan, thank you for making me look back at the info.
Squirrel, nothing came up on the marriages but thank you for pushing me in the right direction and look at the siblings.
Be back shortly.

Just found 2 possible maiden names for their mother so will need to write and apply for both birth certificates. Hopefully one will match up.
Thank you Jan and Squirrel for your help.

Janet, try looking on the cheshirebmd site for that birth in 1839.

http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/

Print off the form on the website for one of them, send with an sae. Put all available information you have on the form - at the bottom or on the back if need be, such as the likely area of Stockport born in (e.g. Edgeley, Davenport, Brinnington - yes, I live near there), even address on the 1841 census, father's name and occupation. Say you have found more than one possible birth, could they find the most appropriate.

Put your phone number on, and they may well ring you to discuss and find the right person. They won't give you the details over the phone, but enough to decide whether to go ahead. If they can't find any birth that fits, you will not get charged at all.

If the birth is not on the Cheshirebmd site, write to the appropriate office with the details:

Superintendent Registrar, Stockport Register Office, Town Hall, Stockport, Cheshire, SK1 3XE, UK

Either give credit card details or send a cheque. No charge if the right person is not found.

Just looked at Stockport, and lots of them have mothers maiden name given.

Good luck
