Hi Bruce

I'm afraid you do have to buy the copy certificates; there's no way to view them beforehand.

Never pay more than £7 for a BMD cert. There are companies on the internet that will charge far more.

If you order online from the GRO you can ask for a reference check (say, for a mother's maiden name in the case of a birth) and you will only be charged £3 and will be given £4 refund.

Bruce, if you are trying to narrow down a birth or whatever you can always let people have a go for you. Also worth trying to see if there are other people who have the same family in their trees - a lot of information and cert. exchanging goes on if you track down relatives!
Like the term Reunighters by the way!
