Thanks Glitter Baby - I've learned to keep an open mind with regard to names so I'll keep this as an option for further research. My 3x gt grandfather was always being listed on his children's marriage certificates as William James instead of James William and my 2x gt grandmother was registered as Maria instead of Charlotte, and her father was William Henry but only ever appeared on census returns as Henry so I take nothing for granted name-wise!!

Thank you both for your help. I had been concentrating my search around London to start with and hadn't seen the West Derby entry Glitter Baby. I'll keep this one in mind.

Malcolm, thanks for that. I had been veering toward the Marylebone registration but that was purely an instinct thing - my grandmothers family were all registered in the Marylebone registration district in the early 1900's and I remember visiting my Aunt Marie in the early 1960's when she lived in Maida Vale. Not a very professional way of researching things I know!! I'll go for the Marylebone certificate and keep my fingers crossed that its the right one....... I know I can use the father's name as a checking reference but my other rellies had a nasty habit of transposing names.

Maida Vale would have come under St Marylebone at that time, now all part of Westminster Council.

Mmm, you're right, the occupation doesn't match unfortunately.

Did you find that info on Ancestry?

Wow, Glitter Baby - thank you. I was just checking the first site you gave me and couldn't find Maida Vale listed. This gives me something to work with.

I have an Alice Maud Lloyd born Maida Vale 1882/3 according to the 1911 census. Freebmd shows an Alice Maud Lloyd registered in Marylebone in Sep qtr 1882 and another one in Sep qtr 1883 in Chelsea.

Does anyone know which is likely to be the correct registration district as I can't find her on any census.

Her marriage certificate in 1907 (age given as 24) in Farnham shows her father as Robert Lloyd, plumber - but I'm blowed if I can find them on the 1891 or 1901 census.

Any advice gratefully accepted.
