Hi Kathryn, according to

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_numbering

British houses started being numbered with the Postage Act of 1765.

Hi Netty,

I have looked through all census for my village and there are no houses numbered. I want to get an idea of which part of the street my rellies lived in but no luck.

if you use the free Mormon LDS site you can work your way along a street in both directions once you have found your family

In small villages it's unlikely that you would find the houses numbered although they might have names. In the village where I live now there are no numbers.
