So do I! And not knowing when he went to England doesn't help.

There are a few but it's difficult to know which if any are your John. There aren't any with an occupation which matches. Also you don't when your John went to England. I wish English certs where like Scottish where mother's name is recorded in most cases

I have a John Ritchie in Scottish 1901 census but it seems unlikely he went to England as he died in the Arbroath where he lived with his wife and children.

The John Ritchie in the English 1911 census gives his occupation as 'telephone canvasser'.

Do you have him on the 1901 Scotland census?
If he is on the 1911 England census does it give his occupation?

My interest in this census is that it could help determine where my grandfather john Ritchie was at that time.

He is an elusive character!

According to his marriage cert (1912 newton Abbot, Devon) he states his age as 40, birthplace Aberdeen, father John Ritchie deceased (no occupation entered). If his age is correct he was born in 1866.

The England 1911 census shows him in Barnstable, Devon where his age is 45, birthplace Aberdeen. This would mean he was born in 1872.

It seems pretty certain it is the same man but although I have reseached all the John Ritchie (with father John ritchie) born in 1866 in Aberdeen but none seem to fit.

I am now about to research all John Ritchie (with father John Ritchie) born in Aberdeen in1872.

I'm hoping the Scottish 1911 census will help...

It wont be released early

"the Registrar General for Scotland does not plan to release the Scottish 1911 Census information until just after the date of the 2011 Census (27 March 2011), by which time "the 100 year closure period will have ended".

The Registrar General for Scotland believes that "this strikes a balance between the interest of the records to family historians and the privacy of the people recorded by the Census, some of whom will still be alive. People who completed the 1911 Census were promised confidentiality. Although that is a long time ago, it is important not to call into question the validity of the equivalent promise on modern Census forms. That could deter people from filling in the Census form, reducing the response rate and making the Census results (which are so important for many aspects of Scottish life) less accurate".

Is there something specific to the census that you need to know?

Do you know when in 2011 or if it's likely to be released early as in the Eng & Wales 1911 census?
