Love the use of the term 'Alien'

The U.S. Internal Revenue Service still uses the term as in "Non-Resident Alien" or "Resident Alien" to denote someone from outside the U.S.

They even publish a booklet "U.S. Tax Guide for Aliens."

As these were handwritten forms filled in by ships crew and the individuals concerned invariably couldn't speak English, there was plenty of opportunity for error, so don't get too excited!

Great news Paul
I have relatives who came in from either Poland or Germany 1850-1870 sometime. Guess what I'm going to be doing this evening !!

If you have foreign ancestors who arrived in England in Victorian times, check out Ancestry's new 'England, Alien Arrivals, 1810-1811, 1826-1869 ' collection.

This data collection contains lists of aliens (non-British citizens) arriving in England between 1810 and 1869. The records come from the National Archives collection series. These records were primarily created as a result of various acts passed by parliament to regulate immigrants and other incoming individuals.

The exact information recorded varies, but generally the following type of information is listed:

•Name of alien
•Port of arrival
•Date of arrival
•Ship
•Country of origin, nativity, and/or nationality
•Age
•Profession
•Certificate number
