I have found my great grandmother in all census from 1851 to 1911, bar one....1871.

In 1851/1861 she was Mary Mawdsley born in Kirkby, Lancashire.

She married in 1868 a John Roberts, and they lived in Bootle.

BY the time of the 1871 census they would have had a daughter, Mary Ellen.

Mary Roberts nee Mawdsley only reappears in 1881 when she has a lodger called George Massie living with her and her two sons, John and William.

Any thoughts as to where I now look??

Mary was born Mary Mawdsley in Kirkby in 1851 (I have her birth cert)

Mary Ellen, her daughter was born in 1869. My grandfather John, was born in 1874 and he always said he was born in Bootle.

Mary Ellen married a Peter Carney in 1892, he died and she married a Robert Croston in 1905.

I think that Mary Roberts, nee Mawdsley was a widow by 1891 as she is recorded in that census as being "married to her lodger, George Massie in the 1891 census. (They did not marry until 1894).
