Thanks Liz, will have bash at our library,
BTW looking at the census original , the " Grill" is written in the box for the wife, so maybe its just "James Bruce, carmen contractors" I am looking for?
in the sons' box it is also just "James Bruce"

Perhaps the library local to the area would hold records, or be able to tell you where they are kept - our local history centre has Kellys and Trade Directories.

would the Kelly's list contain any info, I wonder?
looking for a firm of Carmen, contractors. named
James Bruce Grill.
can anyone offer any suggestions? its the firm (i believe)my great grandad was working for according to the entry on the 1911 census..
