Hi Sue,

All the best for later - it will need printing - I tried to put the enumerator info into columns, and then GR removed all the formatting!

Ivy

PS I meant to make a comment about the Stepney place of birth given for most of the family, but I don't know enough about the area to know whether Stpeney is absolutely distinct from Limehouse. I am encouraged, though, that Emily's baptism is given as Stepney, and her father's occupation on the baptism record is baker.

Hello Ivy,

Thank you for taking the time to analyse that, I'll print that off today and see if I can make any sense of it.
Think of me when I am staring at it later :-((

Thank you to everyone who answered, you are all wonderful and I would have been utterly stuck without help.

Ah, perhaps there should be a daughter Emily in the household in 1891 -there is this baptism from the London Metropolitan Archives records:

Baptism 15 Jun 1884
Emily Elizabeth Bennett
Father Richard George Bennett
Mother Emily Bennett
Parish St Philip, Stepney
Borough Tower Hamlets

So the age for Emily should be 6 (or 7 if her birthday was before the census)

Hi Sue,

I'm not sure whether the previous (deleted) entry sorted it out for you, but to my mind, it does look as if the others had found the correct entry - it is just a shame that the 1891 enumerator was so careless.

There are several things wrong with both the enumeration and the transcriptions, but there are are not very many individuals with the name Richard Ben*t* born in London or Midd* between 1859 and 1863, and only one ever gives his birthplace as Limehouse; in addition, his middle name is George, he married an Emily and his eldest child is named Richard.

The enumerator did write neatly, though, and his entry for the household reads:

Name Relative M/S Age Age Prof/Occ Where born
Richard G Bennett Head M 30 Z Limehouse, London
Emily Do Wife M 23 Stepney, London
Richard Do Son S 3 Do do
Emily Do Dau S 22 Do do
Bertie Do Son S 22 Z Do do

It is difficult to see how the entry can have ended up like this; on the one hand, Bertie should be (perhaps) Benjie, and age 2; Richard should be aged 8; Emily should be aged 29 or 30 - perhaps they tried to tell the enumerator that he had written down the wrong age, and instead of correcting it, he wrote in another Emily? Certainly, if the parents are 30, they cannot have children aged 22.

The greengrocer occupation is a transcription error - the line above Richard G Bennett is Joseph Townsend, occupation G. Labourer (perhaps general labourer). Alternatively, there is an entry for a greengrocer 10 lines further down the page, which may have been muddled by the transcriber since it is the next entry for anyone born in Limehouse. The "Z " against Richard and his purportedly 22 year old son are marks made a little later when carrying out the statistical analysis of the occupations listed on the census returns. I presume the statistician simply assumed that the women and the 3 year old would not have any occupation.

For my mind, then, it will be your ancestor's entry, but that is only an opinion - it would be ruled out if there is another individual on the 1881 or 1901 census, say, who matches this description.

Polly,

All birth places are given as Limehouse, does that help you?

Hi Sue does it say where the children were born from the 1901 census you have given :)

supercrutch Report 5 Mar 2010 16:57

Hi Polly, I would tend to think that's not him because his occupation throughout has been a baker.

This is so maddening because I have been looking for the son Benjamin in 1891 as I thought that would be a good name to trace - so far I have found nothing.

I do appreciate you looking :-))
