Hi Steven

I should have mentioned that there is a an Adoption Contact Register which was set up by the government in1992. There are 2 parts... one for the adopted person to register and the 2nd part for birth family members to register. There is a small charge for this.

Should either of the two parties register the file is married and the adopted person is given the name of the birth family and it's up to them to make contact.

NORCAP also have a similar adoption contact register.

There is more information on the GRO website ... click into adoptions.

Cheers Gerry

Hi Steven

It's not possible to find the adoptive name of an adoptee as this information is protected by law.

Since the Adoption contact laws changed in England and Wales in 2005. Your father can apply for contact with an approved Intermediary Agency... they charge like wounded bulls and can be up to 1000 pounds for the full service.

A good website to view is adoptionsearchreunion.org.uk there is a search engine where you can pop in place of birth and it will tell you who to write to.

However, you can apply to any adoption agency who have an intermediary service and files can be sent to the agency of your choice.

Hope this helps.

Cheers Gerry

hi thanks for the reply caroles birth mother was called caroline butcher who was born in 1912 but died in 1966, carole was registered as carole orton, but would think that her adopted parents would have changed her name....where would i start to find that out im totally at a dead end

Also, if the adoptive parents changed her surname, then you could not trace her with the Orton surname.

It might be that she died young - there are about 20 death registrations in Nottinghamshire of children named Carole in the ten years after 1947, of whom about hlaf would have been born around 1947. Matching these with the Nottinghamshire birth registrations, there are about four deaths that are not easily matched to an equivalent birth registration.

Have you seen this webpage with FAQs about adoption registration?

Actually, none of the threads seem to have much detail yet. I came back to this one just to say that I would probably attribute the 1981 marriage in Chesterfield to the Carole Orton whose birth was registered in the Chesterfield area in 1961.

Oh, just seen someone else's comments about multiple postings .... I'll check the other five threads to see which one is live!

Hi Steven

Are you searching forwards for a relative (Carole) of your family that was adopted by another family?

Or are you searching backwards to find the birth family of the child (Carole) that your family adopted?

I am not sure whether the birth certificate you mention is the certificate showing the birth date of an adopted child?
