Year of birth must be earlier than children error

I have a problem editing facts I hope that you can help with.

In my tree I have privatised living people, because of this the genes reunited tree has given them a birth year of 0. If I then try to edit facts pertaining to a parent/granparent etc. of e.g. a "Living Davies" whose birth year has been assigned as 0 I get the message "Year of birth must be earlier than children, Living Davies was born in 0".

How do I get around this (other than putting in birth years for privatised people, which defeats the object of privatising them)?

Thank you

In my tree I have added everyone that I want to with their proper dates of birth but then I have gone into "my account" and clicked on "hide living relatives".

This means that when I am viewing my tree I can see everyone (even living relatives details) but if I share my tree with someone else they do not see the details of living relatives.

One problem with Kathleen's suggestion is that the yob/pob and name as you have recorded it will come up in hotmatches/search trees anyway.

Depending how many you are privatising, you could fudge the yob and pob to disguise them further, perhaps by saying pob UNKNOWN and knocking off or adding 5 years to their birth

Like Kathleen, I've used the 'hide living relatives' function. If you do this, you could put the correct info in the notes box. We are not supposed to show living relatives without their permission. All the more reason to have an off line tree as a back up which is only seen by yourself.

I never put living people on any public tree they are only on my own private tree on my own computer.

It's a bit scary if you google a name and a link to one of your public trees comes up. As said you are supposed to ask permission to put living people on your public tree.

Presumably you mean you have privatised names using your pc tree program and then uploaded a gedcom to GR?

I must add that I have asked permission of all living relatives that I have on my tree. I don't have that many people at all on my tree on Genes and use FamilyTreeMaker to record my main tree.

When I did the original GEDCOM from my tree to GR, yes I went through it and made sure no living people were added . It took a while but I felt safer that way. I then kept this amended tree on my computer so I could use it on other public forums.

"Presumably you mean you have privatised names using your pc tree program and then uploaded a gedcom to GR?"

Yes this is how I did it, should i have done it differently?

Ok, not a problem if you wish to privatise on your PC program, but you can't then expect to edit the uploaded info on GR, basically that record is then sterile.

If you use the privatise option on GR then details are hidden from people who have access to your tree, but (allegedly - needs to be checked out) the 'privatised' named will theoretically be visible in searches that other members make, or will appear in Hot Matches.

I retract my previous statement

**One problem with Kathleen's suggestion is that the yob/pob and name as you have recorded it will come up in hotmatches/search trees anyway.**

On looking at a close relatives tree (helped to set it up) the still living relatives are shown as 'Hidden Hidden'. They do not come up on 'search trees'.

As the people are not on my tree, I can't check for 'hints' via the tree page.
