Royal Navy Court Martial

Helen Report 8 Mar 2010 03:30

My great grand uncle Charles Neville White was court martialed and dismissed from the Royal Navy in 1869.

I have a report of it from the Times but does anyone know where I could get a fuller report of it. I live in Australia so I cannot visit British records office myself.

Also the ship was in Malta as the time. Would the Navy had shipped him back to England or would they had just let him go there and leave him to get home himself or go wherever he would.

Thanks.

Helen

Helen,

Do you have a copy of his service record. The National Archives documents online website can provide the record for £3.50 . With luck it will record whether he was detained prior to dismissal.

See http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/default.asp

Hi Helen
it seems he was on trial twice. The first time was on the 11th December for 3 counts of insubordination for which he received 3mths time. The 2nd time was on the 17th December for which he was dismissed.

Thanks to both Pete and Quoy.

I do have the record from the National Archives but I thought there might be an actual record of the court martial trial somewhere.

There is probably a record at the National Archives. What was the name of the ship?

According to the National Archives website the details of Courts Martial and other custody records for RN personnel are currently closed.

"After 1856, the abstracts are in ADM 194/43 - 45 but closed because the volumes run on to 1915."

Thank you.

The ship was the Lord Warden.

I assume that ADM 194/43 - 45 volumes would be released in 2016.

That lad is abit of a mystery in the family.

The RN Court Martial records are closed for 75 years from the last date in the file, so I find it surprising that they are closed. There are also various records at Kew regarding the ship for the year in question - whether they might provide any info on this matter though I don't know. Might be worth a look.

I was at Kew today and had a look for the court martial details. They are available and also the ships muster. Will send details by email. Not much detail, basically disrespectful conduct followed by drunkeness. Transferred to HMS Hibernia.
