Thanks all.

I have managed to track this relative down and it appears that she is a Fanny..her parents must have decided to have a break from tradition (or else ran out of names to use after having 14 girls in a row - Fanny being the 15th!)

I have a feeling it could be an affectionate name for Ann too. In the past sometimes my dad would call me Fanny Ann.

One of mine was always Fanny but occasionally known as Annie

I have to agree with the first response, it's usually short for Frances.

Fanny was an incredibly common name in its own right in the latter 1800s

It's a bit out of the ordinary for this family. Every generation has used EXACTLY the same names as the one before with no variation until the most recent generations.

SylviaInCanada

It could also be a name in its own right

or a nickname that bears no relationship to the "real" name, for some completely non-understandable reason (at least to us!).

Thanks, I would never have guessed either of those...

Usually Frances - occasionally Euphemia

Hi just a quick one...

Could anyone please advise if Fanny is a shortened version of another name circa 1800?

Thanks
