Hi
you mention that this person was a motor engineer/driver at a coal getting site. At this time in the second world war the government started open cast coal mining to help the war effort. This job description and site (not coal mine)
could mean that he was a driver/ mechanic for earth moving machinery used on an open cast coal site.
This is where they extract shallow coal seams by digging a big hole in the ground like a quarry.

Regards
Andrew.

Would just add, an engine driver isnt always as we expect - it often means someone working a mechanical piece of machinery - "driving an engine" so you can see how getting entangled makes more sense.

You will usually find information like this in the local newspaper. I would suggest contacting the library local to the area in question, you may be lucky and they may be able to do a look up for you especially as you have a specific date.

hi everyone, im hoping sombody could please help me obtain more information on the circumstances surrounding my grandfathers death.
my grandfather "john crow mckellar" died 18th august 1944 of strangulation at work due to being entangled in some type of machinery, he was only 41.
john was a motor engineer/driver, he was working at a coal getting site near to rainborough, yorkshire, his death cert has given an address for the place of death: possibly "Rhion lodges" deffinately Brampton Bierlow road.
there must be some info on the above incident available somewhere , but i have ran out of ideas and would be most grateful for any help anybody can offer!
regards
arlene
