Things just didn't survive sometimes - even in the case of men in high positions. If the staff at the India Office have had a proper search then I don't suppose it's there.

Hi Helen and Plain ann now annie laurie,

Under normal circumstances I'd agree with you, but I doubt that's this case with this family. Both her father and her husband had very good careers. Her father was in the Royal Artillery and had travelled all over the world, her husband was an engineer and later worked on the Hoogly bridge in India. He was elected to become a member of the IOM. He also became Chief Sup of the G L Railway. So I can't imagine they wouldn't have married.

I too can't find his father's birth record, but I do have his baptism record, and it does give his date of birth so I'm lucky in that.

Thanks anyway for your thoughts,

Regards, Lou

I've been to the India Office today and found baptisms of 3 out of 4 children to one couple, but no marriage to be found. Don't forget that their records aren't complete.

Perhaps they weren't married?

I don't think it was a legal requirement to register marriages and births in India? My Grandad's birth was never registered- I was just lucky that his baptism record was found.

Hi Somerset Girl, thanks very much for taking the time to look. But none of them are her. She was 17 when she had her first child, so the 2nd one can't possibl be her. But thanks anyway.

Helen, I've already tried that and they can't find her either. We know she must have married in India, as her husband was llving there from 1879 and their first child was born there in 1881.

We have tried all the online web sites now with no luck. Never mind, they have been an elusive lot, so nothing new there. Oh the challanges we face!!!

Shall plod on, thanks to you both for your help, good luck to you.

Regards, Lou

Hi, has anyone got access and is willing to look up the Application to Marry records please.

Looking for the marriage of William H Baker to Helena Bourke around 1880 in India, possibly Jeypore in West Bengal.

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help, It's much appreciated.
