Parish registers are a good source of information.
Online you can check the entries on the IGI on the familysearch site, but it is always good to verify the details on the actual enties if possible. You can hire the films and view them at a Mormon family history centre near your home, if you wish.
I have visited Record Offices near where ancestors lived and it is great to go through registers recording the lives at that time.
Remember to check burial registers too.
This can help find children, who might have died young, - especially important if the family were in the habit of naming offspring after their dead siblings.

Wills might also give clues to family relationships.

Check online for parish records for your area of interest. Some registers have been transcribed in some counties.

What is the best way to trace family relatives before the 1800s? I'm still a novice at all this but have managed to trace one of my relatives (Mordecai Roberts) back to 1787, however, I don't seem to be able to find any previous records online.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Regards,
Justine
