1927 Birth Cert Query

In the 'informant' box on the birth cert, it names the mother and her address, then underneath
"As per declaration Dated 9th December 1927"
Does anybody know what this might mean please.

My first thought was that the child was not registered within the allotted time, but..........

Child was born on 17th September 1927 in a private house in Oakham, Rutland and registered on 10th December 1927.
This was an illegitamate birth, no father on cert.

Would appreciate any help. Thank you

Was the birth registered in the same registration district as the nursing home? Legally a birth has to be registered in the area in which the child was born but if the birth was registered elsewhere the mother would have to sign a declaration.

Hi NinjaLady,
Yes, birth was in a private house in a suburb of Oakham and birth was registered in Oakham.

Thanks

My maths isn't great but six weeks from 17th September would take you to something like 29th November, so perhaps it was outside the time limit for registration..... Maybe your first thought was correct.

Hi NinjaLady,

My maths is not too great either, and I'm not sure, at that time, what the
time limit was, but, 6 weeks = 42 days. By my calculations 17th September to 10 December is about 54 days. So possibly outside the
time limits.
My other thought was that perhaps she had the baby without a doctor, nurse, midwife being aware that she was pregnant and didn't have the
necessary paperwork for registration. Not had kids so don't know the
proceedure.

Thanks for your thoughts.

If the mother went to another rego office to register the birth, she'ld make a declaration and that office would forward this to Oakham for them to make the actual rego.

Hi mgnv,

Well that is also a possibility. Her home address (as per the cert) was Market Harborough, Leicester. Although by todays standards not very far, in those days travel would not be so easy, especially as this was her 3rd
illegitamate child!

Thank you for your thoughts.

I would agree, the birth was most likely registered in a different district to where it took place.

This is the relevant regulation.

"Events had to registered in the Registration District in which they had occurred. However the Act states
Any person required by this Act to give information concerning a birth, who removes before such birth is registered out of the sub-district in which such birth has taken place, may, within three months after such birth, give the information by making and signing in the presence of the registrar of the sub-district in which he resides a declaration in writing of the particulars required to be registered concerning such birth; and such registrar on payment of the appointed fee shall receive and attest the declaration and send the same to the registrar of the sub-district in which the birth took place"

Hi InspectorGreenPen

Many thanks for your reply. That does seem to be more likely. It was just inside the statutory 3 months, so late registration doesn't seem to be applicable. Certainly travelling, even in the 20's, was not so easy as today especially when you have three little ones in tow.

Thank you everybody for your replies, very helpful.
