I don't know what the fuss is about,when I wed in 1965 I was 161/2 and that marriage lasted 20 years,and 5 children.

No, it wasn't a shotgun marriage.

think back to some of the history you learnt in school

it wasn't unknown for "royalty" or lords and ladies to be married at the age of 8 or younger ............................. they then either stayed with their parents until puberty, or moved to the in-laws house and lived separately from the "spouse" until puberty

I think the youngest I remember reading about was 3 or 4 years old when she was married off.

Of course, such marriages were usually for matters of state ....... or to unite families.

I think it maybe an interesting topic to add;" what is the youngest person married that you've found?"

What do you think?

Thanks for the reply Dee, I wasn't sure if I have read it sometime in the past. Glad I wasn't around when they married so young.

That's right Pamela, girls could marry at 12 and boys at 14... they were classed as minors or not at full age, I think this was until the 1920's!!!!

Thanks for the answer Dee, I wasn't sure as it was such an early date. I believe boys could marry at 14 and girls at age 12 but was not sure of the dates.

Thank you.

Can anyone answer a quick question for me please?

I have a copy of a marriage for 1839 which states that my ancestor was a minor when she married and the groom was of full age. What would full age be in the 1830's?

Many thanks.
