Hi
Stumbled across a query problem, my other half has on her Birth Certificate, 'Father Unknown' how can these records be searched from the BMD Records, as the Paternal name is used to record the Birth. Advice would be appreciated, there must be many of the period with these types of entry.

Is there a category where a pseudo name is used for registration listings, Thanks in advance of any tips.

Hi William,

Your OH surname will be registered in the surname of the mother from the details on her Birth Certificate.,,ie mothers surname prior to any marriage.

The birth cert. and the index are both created from the register.
The index will show the mother's surname at the time of registration.
Sometimes a father with a different surname will jointly register the birth. In this circumstance the birth will be in the index twice, with both surnames.

Can be even more complicated, if the mother has been married previously.

Based on experience in my grandson's mum's family:-

Miss Jones married Mr Smith, and they had two children. OK so far - father shown as Mr Smith. The couple then split up and Mrs Smith as she then was, formed a relationship with Mr Brown - they had a further nine children. All were registered in the name of Smith, mother's maiden name Jones, no father mentioned on the certs.

17 years after the birth of their first, Mrs Smith and Mr Brown married. Their nine children were then re-registered in the name of Brown.
