Hi Sylvia,

It is actually the first death I found that is most likely the one - in which case the death was registered in the September quarter.

I presume that it is your Johnson Family Tree on ancestry that has his death as suicide????

This looks like your guy on the 1891 Census .... in which case he calls himself Thomas Richard Johnson

1891 Census

Name: Thomas Richard Johnson

Estimated birth year: abt 1853
Relation: Head
Spouse's name: Alice
Gender: Male
Where born: Hull, Yorkshire, England

Civil parish: Holy Trinity and St Mary
Ecclesiastical parish: Holy Trinity
Town: Holy Trinity and St Mary
County/Island: Yorkshire
Country: England

Registration district: Hull
Sub-registration district: Humber

Thomas Richard Johnson 38 Fish salesman
Alice Johnson 35
Richard Harry Johnson 10
Arthur Johnson 7
Alice Johnson 5
Percy Carlin Johnson 3
Frank Johnson 9/12
Edith Browne 8 Niece

Address:- 51 Myton Gate

so it looks as though that second death that Kath found could be the right one

If you got the death certificate, it would tell if it was a suicide or not.

If it was a suicide, there probably would have been an inquest, a date, and a coronor's name

Then you could cotnact the library or Local Studies and Archives Centre, and ask for them to look through archived papers for the report of the inquest.

You'll be amazed at what the detail that the papers printed then.

If you don't want to go to the expense of buying the certificate, you could ask someone at the library or Centre to search through 5 months worth of papers for first, the death ofThomas Johnson, and second, the report from the inquest.

.............. the death is registered in Oct-Dec quarter, he could have died anywhere from September to December (the death would not be registered until after the inquest) ........... and the newspaper report could be published as late as January

But they may well charge you for such a fishing expedition!

If you got the certificate, you could reduce the search to a 2-3 week period

Did he have a middle name or not? There are these two deaths which could both be possibles:-

Name: Thomas Richard Johnson
Estimated birth year: abt 1852
Year of Registration: 1897
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
Age at Death: 45
District: Hull (1854 Onw)
County: Yorkshire - East Riding, Humberside
Volume: 9d
Page: 195

and:-

Name: Thomas Johnson
Estimated birth year: abt 1857
Year of Registration: 1897
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Age at Death: 40
District: Hull (1854 Onw)
County: Yorkshire - East Riding, Humberside
Volume: 9d
Page: 181

If you could find the right death certificate it would give you the cause of death (and tell you whether or not it was suicide).

Can anyone suggest any tips - I have a relative who died in 1897. The rumour passed down the generations is that he committed suicide - a scandal in those days as it was still an illegal offence.

I have a fair bit of information about him, and the uproot it caused to the family, but wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to how I could go about learning a little more.

His name is Thomas Johnson, born 1853 in Hull. Lived in Myton as a Fishmonger and Oyster seller. Married to Alice Browne.

We believe he died in 1897. was his business failing (as his family moved out the shop by 1901)?

Any suggestions/help will be much appreciated.

Thanks
