Hello Christine

Yes it does seem faster, although at the moment I'm trying to insert a spell checker, i thought i had done it once but i had to uninstall firefox, i could not get any websites to open, but i am persevering, will keep looking, im sure i will crack it.

Many thanks George

Pleased you've sorted it out.

Are you finding Firefox quicker than IE?

Hi Christine,I know what you mean..I'm just refering to the function of "Ancestry" the image has 2 options and the transcription has 3.

George, You are right thinking you don't have to uninstall IE.

I use Firefox and find it much quicker than IE, only use IE occasionally but you can still keep it as your default browser if you want and just use your other browser for Ancestry.

Cass, You can save the image to your computer not just the transcription. They are saved as a jpeg, the same as photos.

Hi,I believe it's always been the same with" Ancestry",in that you can only save the "transcription" to your Computer.

Really strange as I had this problem last week. I also ended up sending an image to myself.

Just seems to have sorted it self out.

I have given up sending messages to Ancestry about any problems as you always get the same response from them.

Rose & Christine

Thanks for your tips, will try both and see what happens.

Rose does that mean i have no need to uninstall IE8, but just install one of the others? and run side by side.

Many thanks

You could try the option of using Ancestry displayed in the compatability mode in IE8.

Click tools, then Compatability view settings, then add Ancestry.

George,

Try Firefox, Chrome, Safari or another browser. It's also good to have an alternative to IE.

Jonesey

Im beginning to think that myself that it may be something to to do with IE8.

Looking at Madmegs way of doing it just tried that but i dont get any information showing to "save picture as" all i get when i right click on the image is one line stating properties.

I think i will go back to IE7 unless Ancestry offer anymore advice
Once again Jonesey and Madmeg many thanks for all the advice

Madmeg Report 17 Mar 2010 15:35

I've never done it any other way than this:

Right click on the image, choose Save Picture As, then find the folder in which you want to save it (probably in My Documents), give it a sensible name and that works for me.

Jonesey

Just tried again with an image which is not in my shoebox, i get the fixed menu, but only two options.

(1) Add to somone in my tree

(2) Save to shoebox

None for saving to computer

I think i can live with that at least i can get around the problem.

Hello Jonesey

Many thanks for your reply, i can see what you are saying, but its the problem with the "save" button when i click on that the menu appears but it does not stay there, it disappears so the function of saving it somewhere does not show.
I will try as you suggest by saving the transcription to my shoebox and see what happens

This only started in the past couple of days and i have had it before. As you know i use this when someone asks me if i can send them the original image, which i have always saved to the computer and emailed it from there.
I did get around it by sending the image by email to myself, so i can work around it from there.

Its just annoying when something goes wrong and i cant find an answer to it.

Thanks for your reply and assistance

George

PS amazingly i saved the image to my shoebox now i have just clicked on the "save" button lo and behold the menu appeared, asking where i want to save it, even more confused.

I wonder now if i need to save to shoebox first then i will get the other options, but never had to do that before.

Just to let you all know who assisted with my problem, the one that turned trumps was changing my internet browser to Mozilla/Firefox.
Using this browser i now get the options to save to my computer, to my shoebox or to someone in my tree.

So many thanks to all who gave me advice on my problem, it is so much appreciated.

Just have to find my way around it now.

Once again many thanks, what would i do without the help you get on here no matter what the problem is.

Regards George

Please i don't know if anyone can offer any advice, but here is my problem.
The problem i have is when i view a census original image and try to save it to my computer, when i click on the "save" button the drop down menu box which contains the functions to either save to my computer, attach to a person in my tree, or save to the shoebox.
The drop down menu box opens up but immediately disappears so i am unable to carry out the task of saving.

I hope i have explained this well enough for you to understand.

I have been in touch with Ancestry and they told me to clear temporary files , browsing history, which i do daily anyway, but also told to clear "cookies".This i have done but it has not resolved the problem.
I have contacted them again to tell them, but i wondered if anyone else was having the same problem or had it in the past, and found a solution.

My operating system is Windows XP browser IE8

Any thoughts on this will be much appreciated

George

PS one other thing they advised to do was to change the number in "disk space to be used" field to be at least 300(MB) i have done that .
Please note i am not that computer literate, so please idiots guidance please
