Hi All,

Thanks for all your help.

I am currently awaiting delivery of some BMD certificates so that I have a stable foundation to work from. As soon as I get more info I will post again.

If I can be of any help to anybody then just ask.

Thanks again

Ancestry has parish records for London (and some others) going back before 1816 also criminal register, WW1 service/pension records which are good as often you can find next of kin which gives another lead.

As Jennifer has said below Google! and don't stop after first few pages, as info can pop up much further along.

Grant I have answered you on the gen board. it is best to just have it on one board to avoid people duplicating help but I realise that you didn't know that.

I will copy my reply to here then you can delete the other thread if you w ant to.
you read the tips board you will often find those questions answered. To go back further you can visit record offices in the areas your family lived, they are very helpful people who work there, it is free but you will need to get a reader ticket for which you need to produce a driving licence or passport for ID. ROs vary so it is best to check on line as to what they require.

You can also find information on Familysearch.com but be wary, the information is probably OK if it gives a reference for baptisms etc that you can check out but some are entered by family members, these will not have been verified.

When you say you are back to 1816 is that a birth? If so it will have given you the parents to concentrate on.

If you have specific requests put them on here, maybe on trying to find, there are loads of people who will help but please give as much info as you have and please don't put duplicate threads across the boards as the same people usually read all boards.

Good luck

Welcome to this addictive hobby.

One big thing I can say is 'GOOGLE' names ,places , history etc you will be amazed at what you can find

To go beyond 1816 you will need parish records, many are on IGI here: http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp
or you will need to visit archives.

this site is invaluable : http://www.genuki.org.uk/
also the National Archives web site

Military records: Ancestry has WW1 but not all survived due to bombing and fire during WW2

for WW2 only next of kin can get records they are about £30 I think

I'm sure other people will have more ideas.

Good Luck Jennifer

Hello everyone,
I am sure that there have been hundreds of messages like this and I apologise if I am going over old ground.

I have just started tracing my family tree and am enjoying it very much. I am quite fortunate in that my Grandma is 90 years old and her sister is 96 so I have plenty of first hand information and birth certificates etc.
I have got back as far as 1816 since I started on Tuesday and it seems that this is as far as online records go.

I have so many questions it is difficult to know what to ask first.

How do i go back further? Where do I go? What information will I need?

I am not just trying to go back as far as possible, I would also like to find out where and how they lived.

Also, what can military service records tell me? Where do I get them from? What information do I need to get them?

I know that is a lot of questions (sorry!) but any help would be greatly appreciated
