I agree. One of his sons was born in Rio in a later census.

Trading WITH Brazil, rather than trading Brazilians, I hope! As he was living in Birkenhead and came from Falmouth it is not unlikely that he was/had been a seaman and had made connections in South America. Rose's research would seem to back this up beautifully!!

Which census shows he has a son born in Rio? The person I'm interested in is actually Francis Codd Morphew, but shown as Marpheer in the 1851 census. I can't find him in 1861 and I think he was in gaol, but he's in London in 1873 )as Frank) with his wife Maria, and son Benjamin.
