What surname was he registered under? Cooper or Farrow-Cooper? When was he born?

So there is no father named on the birth cert?

You could be right about Farrow being the surname of the father, but then again, Farrow could be one of mum's ancestor's maiden names so don't assume Farrow is the father - not unless you can find some other evidence about him.

Have you tried to find a marriage for mum? [Martha] Green to [Unknown] Cooper - or [Martha] Cooper to [Unknown] Green? With those names it might not be easy as they're not particularly rare. But, if you've found [Martha - or whatever her name was] in earlier censuses with her parents, and if your great grandfather was born in that area then it's likely that [Martha] married in that area.

What does it actually say on the certificate?

If father is John Brown then mother's name would say Martha Brown formerly Jones. Jones is the maiden name so that's the one you need to use for the birth record.

But, if you look for the marriage of John Brown and Martha Jones and get the cert for that it should give you their ages and you would have a better chance of finding the correct birth cert.
