Once you have his birth certificate, you could look for his parents on the 1901 census, which is available to view at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI). There is a 40% complete index of heads of household here:

http://www.from-ireland.net/ant/1901census/belfast/gsurnames3.htm

(surnames beginning with G)

which lists just 4 Glass(e) households in Belfast.

The 1911 census is available online, and lists 749 Glass entries for all Ireland. If his parents were in Belfast, the county to search is Antrim, which has 350 Glass entries.

The 1911 census online search is here:

Pre 1922 partition records are available at:
http://www.groireland.ie/
NB it's just 6 euros to buy an uncertified image of the rego

You can look up the GRO(I) index at:
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=allCollections;r=1

Post partition, you'll need GRONI at:
http://www.groni.gov.uk/index.htm

For the troubles, try googling
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_Civil_War

The 1921 census was delayed to 1926 as a result.
