Just seen this post wit interest.
Hubby went to do the AVG update whcih came through on his laptop yesterday but it suddenly threw up 'trojan horse' and all sorts of weird things. He eventually got rid of everything without harming the comp. well, he says its OK now! But it was rather scary!!

Pat,

Yes that was the problem I was getting with AVG it just seemed to take over the PC's resources slowing things down to a crawl.

This is the link to the Microsoft site for Security Essentials.

http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

I also have Avira Antivirus installed too. This is not obtrusive at all, but you do have to be careful with more than one program running at the same time as they can interfere. SpyBot Search and Destroy is another program I use - run every other week or so.

Hi.
I was going to down load Avg and get rid of McAfee as that is always running the back ground and pc is so slow....
Blimey now don't know what to do..
Do you have to download Windows Security Essentials...sorry I'm useless with these things.

I am aware of a number of AVG users, and that includes myself, who have noticed that the latest version has a significant detrimental effect on your PC's performance when it is running in background monitoring your activity.

As a result I have no removed all traces of the software from my pc and rely on Windows Security Essentials as my main protection tool and firewall. The performance improvement from switching over was absolutely huge.

I would be interested to hear of other peoples experiences with AVG.

Hello Elizabeth and Molly,

Thank you both for your replies!! The problem I had was when I googled AVG I got so many different Web addresses I wasn't sure which was the correct one. I just didn't want to download the wrong one!!

You will have to click around quite a bit on the AVG site - it took me ages (by which I means weeks off and on) to upgrade from the AVG Free anti-virus which I already had to AVG 9. There are several misleading trails which try to lead you to AVG Internet Security, which you pay for - which I believe is fine only it wasn't what I wanted.
I did find it eventually - it took some time to load but seems to work all right - but it did seem to me that for the first 24 hours I was very very slowed down - I just might be blaming the wrong cause, but I was mentally composing messages to our computer guru asking for help!

Hope you manage to sort it out
