Does anybody know the answer please?

I have looked on Free BMD website for a marriage and it does not seem to be listed. I then decided just to put in the female's details and thought I might be able to solve that way. There was one possible entry but when I clicked on the number which then goes into another screen to list all the entries under that page number there is 5 ladies and only 4 men. I then thought I would look at the Geneologist list which are the orginals for the qrt in question but my man is not listed does this mean the entry could still be mine ie if it is missing from FREE BMD ddoes that me it was missing off the orginals?

Could you give the details of who you are looking for? Most often it's a case of transcription errors.

Andrea, as Maureen mentioned, it is most probably a transcription error. The maximum you should have on a page is 4 couples, so 8 names, so one additional name on the page maybe transcribed/indexed incorrectly.

You can also see the original index page on FreeBMD by clicking on the spectacles next to the entry.

This happens quite frequently. The other name is there somewhere, it is a matter of doing a bit of lateral thinking and detective work to find it. Transposition of reference numbers happens a lot, 3 for an 8, 5 for a 3 and so on and so forth.

For example:-
If you know the second name, then search for it for the same quarter and district. Don't put the spouse name in as this will fail to return anything. Try wildcard searches. Look for a reference that is similar, or which has an _ in it because the transcriber couldn't make it out.

In Andrea's example, where there appears to be a extra name, check the images first. It could be obvious if the reference has been quoted incorrectly. Search again on what you think is the correct reference.

Many thanks for all your suggestions, after KeithinFuairah's advice I looked at the information on free BMD and one lady's name in the list (not my lady) did not have a pair of glasses next to I then decided to look for this lady on the orginals and could not find her in that quarter so I expect the lady who I thought was mine was not.

The person I am looking for is Charlotte Jones marrying a john Hyde in Birmingham or aston in arount 1847 - they are in the 1851 census. as being married but did she just take on his name?
