saving tree to disc

could anyone help please. is there anyway of saving your tree to a disc from gr or ancestry.or do i need to purchase a program ie (family tree maker . ancestral quest . tribal) many thanks to everyone.

You can save it by exporting a gedcom and copying the file to whatever storage medium you choose..

However, to read and make sense of the file you will need a program such as Family Tree Maker on your PC.

inspectorgreen pen. thank you i will have to purchase family tree maker or another program.i tried downloading a gedcom' when e mail came windows said it does not recognize this file'so i gave up.could you recomend a good tree maker.that is easy to use thank you

You could try a free one. Family search do a free PAF programme.

If you want to purchase one TWR computing have some offers on the 2009 Family Tree Maker. £19.95 which includes a 6mth subscription to Ancestry or £14.95 with 3mths.

Yes, I would agree with Christine. PAF if you want a freebie, else FTM

FTM 2010 is the latest version, but a bit more expensive. It has a few extra facilities but the main tree building part is exactly the same. If you do decide to go for FTM, don't get the 2008 one as this was the first release of the current offering and had a few teething problems.

There are other programs around - you can see some of them on the TWR Computing site - but I don't have experience of them
