Most likely the people extracting the info from the original records made a note of the actual birth date which had been noted by the vicar.
I have several copies of original baptism records where the vicar has noted the childĀ“s date of birth.

Extracted records usually show the date of baptism, not the date of birth which could be years later than the actual birth date. Prior to 1837, birth dates were rarely recorded. I have one ancestor in my tree who was baptised 13 years after he was born. Fortunately the vicar made a comment about his birth year in the register.

Submitted record could be very accurate but you have no way of knowing, unless you can make an independent check to the original records. The most inaccurate are likely to be birth dates attached to a marriage records. These can often be nothing better than an assumption of 21 years prior to the marriage date.

Birth dates on extracted baptisms are more likely to be accurate, but not guaranteed either. The actual event date, i.e. baptism, marriage is likely to be the most accurate.

Look at an IGI record - if it says submitted, someone has sent it in, and there's often no way of finding whence it came; if it's extracted, then there's usually a source # at the foot of the page - click on that and it'll say where the record was extracted from. There aren't any from the GRO, but most Scottish ones in 1855-75 are from GROS.

You are quite correct ...... the General Registeration of bmds did not begin until July 1 1837 ...... so the only records before that date are the parish registers.

So, the birth dates on the I G I come from a mixture of places ........ and you really have to look at each individual record to see whether it says SUBMITTED or EXTRACTED

Extracted records are taken directly from the Parish Register, and are dates of Baptism ......... occasionally you will see a birth date there. Some priests/vicars made a notation in the parish register as to the actual birth date.

Submitted records have been sent in by individuals .......... usually church members ..... and usually do not have any backing documentation, so any dates of birth, baptism, marriage etc are usually an assumption.

I think you may rarely find that someone will have had an old Family Bible or other family record, or may even have been to see the Parish Register to get the date ..................... but as they rarely say, then you cannot be sure.
