Just one point

the 1841 Census does not give birth places

it says y = born in county, or n, not born in county

OR F = foreign, I = Ireland, S = Scotland

so where do you get your information that he was born in Tredegar???

Thanks to all for your help Lettice and John were my grt grt Grandparents
Lettice was described as Letise on the 1851 census in Glamorgan but described as a widow so no more children were born, Lettice was born in Cherryfield Shropshire but i really think it was an orchard so i guess i will never know her maiden name

Baptisms dont show the mother maiden name .a child is named as son or daughter of then fathers name and mum christian name. ie as shown on the IGI he is listed as son of John & lettice Jones

He may not have been registered as it wasnt compulsory till 1875. Have you tried the IGI on Family search for his baptism
